Default Understeer Problem!

i recently installed the TEIN SS on my IS250. i have the damper settings on the stiffest on the front and around the middle for the rear. the problem is i still understeer when hitting sharp corners. what setting is optimal for the car. and/or what other mods can i do to the car.

With the front being set on the stiffest setting it's no wonder you are experiencing understeer, try softening it up a bit so you can get some weight transfer in the corner and make the tires bite instead of just skidding across the pavememt. Now I don't mean to say that the answer is a softer suspension but it is where I would start, keep in mind though that there is only so much that the suspension is going to be able to do for you, to get it really dialed in you would need to have the front end realigned so that the tires are able to maintain full contact with the road during hard cornering...as far as I am aware the IS does not thave that kind of adjustability

To reduce understeer, you want to transfer to the rear. Start off at 8 and 8 (I think the SS has 16 damping levels?) See how you like the ride quality as well as if the under/over steer tendency is to you liking.

If it still understeers, but you like the stiffness overall, try 6 in the front and keep the rear at 8.

okay ill give it a shot. one question. the manual says that there are a total of 16 levels of damping force, however the damping **** actually clicks a total of 25 times. i currently have my settings to clockwise all the way (stiffest) for the front and counterclockwise 7 clicks for the rear.

Set it the reverse.

Have it stiffer in the rear.

i thought becuase the car is rear wheel drive the rear will need to flex a bit more than the front. thus i set it this way. i am going to try every suggestion made all in due time

I would try to keep the settings between front and rear as close to each other as possible, keep in mind that if you get the understeer somewhat under control the car is then going to start to get loose (oversteering), I prefer a car that is a little loose as opposed to one that is a little tight because I find a loose car easier to control.

You are correct. The only alignment adjustment from the factory is toe. No caster, no camber. The outside edges of both my front tires are nearly down to the belts, and I still have almost 50% of legal tread depth in the middle. No other signs of unusual wear. I just push too hard around on-ramps. I'd be a lot happier with it set up like my Supra. -1.5 degrees camber front and rear...

you must be sitting real low. im set at -1.2 front -1.6 rear with a 1.2-1.4" drop up front and 0.6-0.8" drop in rear. tracking the car i felt no understeering that hampered me. ran my dunlops to 28k, 5k after putting on the coilovers and no weird tread wear. right now i ran about 1500-2000 miles on re-01r with no uneven tread wear.

Stock ride height. Not even sport suspension. My problem is lack of camber because it isn't adjustable. I generally don't like lowering because it changes roll couple and roll axis, and often enough to make kidney jarring springs necessary to control roll.
