Default Brake pad life expectancy

Car and Driver reported this month brake pad life expectancy of their longterm 06 BMW 330 at 100,000 miles. Here is a car with superior braking performance that co-exists with extended brake life. Why can't Lexus do the same? This is neither new technology or rocket science. Can't be because their dealers need the service work....maybe they do.

100K mile brake pads? That can't be right... maybe they were saying that's how many miles it would be before they had to pay to replace them because they got the extended full warranty from BMW?

No way. As in the snowball's odds of surviving in a burning inferno, or the number of pigs I saw flying today. Especially for a car that weighs in at 3,450 lbs. No way.

I had a pickup truck with front pads that lasted that long. Any performance oriented brake system would chew up pads much sooner though, IMO.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right... I've got over 31K miles on my IS350 and i'm still on my original pads.

It all depends on how you drive. Like Ramon, I had barely any wear on my pads at ~21k when I got the low dust pads. I posted pics of them here with about 20k on them. I could see them going to 80k easy.

does it matter what they are made from? I wish my pads and rotors would last me 80k.

At my 15K mile service, I had 80% F and 90% R left.

Overall, I'm driving 70-80% highway though.

Here's what I think..

Very aggressive - 10k miles
Mild - 15k miles
Soft - 20-25k
