Like it says in the title I drove about 20 miles with the ebrake engaged. When I got home all I could smell was the brake. Now the ebrake goes all the way to the floor and doesn't work real well. Do ebrakes use pads? did I do damage to the rotor? Do I need to bleed my brakes because I burnt the fluid?

No you didnt damage anything. All you did was just wore out the brake pads faster then normal. Not a big deal. Just forget about it and move on.

Next time dont be so careless. It clearly displays BRAKE in a bright red color when the parking brake is engaged.

Im surprised you traveled 20 miles then realized the BRAKE light was on lol. Its like you were just staring straight. lol well no worries. If you feel unsure of the brakes, i'd say have it checked out. But I think its just the friction caused by the pads that makes the smell.

Yeah I am going to have it checked on my next service, which is about 2 months. I am anxious though to get it looked at and fixed, so I may not wait that long.

Pads? Nope. Shoes. The parking brake actuates shoes inside the rear disc hat, it doesn't use the pads because pad material transfers to the disc when you do it this way and it makes the brakes feel warped.

Toyota has had a separate drum brake for parking for almost 20 years now. It was a huge issue on the MkI MR2s because they used the pad clamping method and the owners constantly complained about warped rotors (well they weren't warped, but they had uneven pad deposits on them so they felt warped.)

"I rent a lot of cars, but I don't always know everything about them. So a lot of times, I drive for like ten miles with the emergency brake on. That doesn't say a lot for me, but it really doesn't say a lot for the emergency brake. It's really not an emergency brake, it's an emergency make the car smell funny lever."

So do you think I'll need new rotors too, or just shoes?
