When did your Ball Joints go out???
#16
Do it youself. Ball joints are $110 from Sewell and you can install them in 2 hours with basic tools. You'll need a jack and stands, 17mm and 19mm sockets and a breaker bar. Easy as pie!

On the fear of failure had mine replaced by a Toyota dealer at 98,000 miles GS400 1999 .dealer said "I would put the bucks into a timing belt etc rather than the unheard of ball joint rplacement" but I siad I wanted it done .. cost me 500$ just under

Already done, $400, $98 each for ball joints and CL member VVTi did the install so I know its perfect. Plus I have a great relationship with Henessy Lexus of Gwinnett so I don't mind spending the money, great dealer and people.

Just a little curious with my car running on such high mileage...
To those who were unfortunate to have this happen to them, what mileage were you at when had your Ball Joints go out?
Also, does anyone know why the car 'Clunks/Clinks' when the ball joints are about to go out?

The sounds youre hearing are caused when the bearing surfaces wear enough that there is slack between them and they repeatedly collide.

I heard that domestic cars don't have theirs sealed, so you can actually grease the joints.
A closed system makes more sense, but if they get that bad and faulty and can be dangerous, then wonder if it was a bad design.

I believe it's a lubrication issue...however, when you buy the joint, you will get the newer designed one that are less likely to fail. I replaced my 01 at 120k and it was in excellent condition...threw it away and sent one to a fellow CL member since I tore the rubber when taking it off.
