Still no word on the front differential mounts from anyone out there? I swear I read about some aftermarket company making them, but I can't recall where...

Hey,

I just changed my diff mounts in the frame last week. If you can find and purchase that "special service tool", I would advise you do so. I am a Toyota tech and the tool was missing...go figure.

So..this is what I did.

Removed the diff and dropped the whole rear subframe. Used an air chisel to remove the old mounts and hammered the new mounts in. I had put them in the freezer for a few hours before the install. Dropping the frame is not that big of a deal if you have a lift. Quick list of things I needed to remove / disconnect.....

Exhaust, the diff, brake calipers, brake rotors, ebrake lines, abs wires, shocks, sway bar, ect. Two 19mm and 8 14 or 12mm bolts hold the frame to the body.

Im glad to see someone started up some dialogue about this because i am up against changing my mounts due to a diff leak.
I also work for Toyota and have been questioning some other techs about changing them without the special service tool since we dont have one either, seems to be a trend.
Was starting to think that dropping the whole subframe was the way to go, thinking the mounts prob wont come out easily even with the "tool".

I think with the tool, it would be a 15-20 minute job after dropping the diff. If you google the tool's part number, you'll come to OTC's website and I'm pretty sure you could order it if you wanted to. Try talking to your service manager, see if you can get the dealership to pay for it since they're really supposed to have it anyway.

Without the tool, you could very likely use an air chisel to get them out with the frame on the car. I don't think you'll get them back in without dropping it though, the spare tire well is about 6 inches from the frame where the mounts are located, no room to swing a hammer. Even after putting them in the freezer, it still took quite a bit of effort to get them in.

If you have a lift, dropping the frame isn't a big deal, I had it sitting on the floor in about an hour and a half. The worst part is figuring out a way to lower it, it's kind of awkward.

Does anybody know if any aftermarket company makes the rear diff cushions? I'm afraid mines are gone too...

 

Titan is the only place i know of that sells aftermarket rear diff mounts. They are soild steel and need to be welded in place.

NIce to see my thread living without any recent posts from me.
I got the diff down and had a devil of a time with the actual mount that needed removing. I took pics and I'll post them some time.
Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting the new mount in.... I'll try freezing it, but it's so damn hot here in Texas I doubt it will stay cold for long.
I don't have a lift, so dropping the subframe isn't much of an option.
I was thinking of cobbling together an install tool of my own, using a piece of metal or wood and some c-clamps....
