So does it really matter if we get an alignment done at a Firestone vs. dealer? Meaning besides the price, do they use another type of machine specific to the IS or something (prob a big noob question).

The only difference is the price, the experience level of the tech and the machine they are using. In the end either your wheels are in spec or they are not.
One big thing you have to worry about is actually getting your car up the ramp. Some shops with a short ramp will not do the alignment unless you sign a waiver before they'll attempt to get your car up. Altho my local discount tire center has an extended ramp that allows for lowered cars to go up. Or if you know a tuner shop with an alignment pit that would be best. But in the end its just how much do you want to pay for the same work.

You could actually do this one yourself pretty easily. There's only one adjustment possible, and measuring toe is dead easy with simple tools.

I am not surprised at all. There is an SA there who gives crazy quotes. I don't quite remember his name. As an example, this guy told me that they charge $220 for TPMS programming. A process that takes all of 5 minutes!
