Default High Pitched Sqeal from Rear Brakes

I have 97 SC300 and for a while now I've been hearing a high pitched sqeal coming from the rear brakes. I checked the brake pads, but they are fine. I thought that they had worn out faster than i thought but that wasn't the case. A friend tells me that it may be the drum brake located behind the rotor that needs to be changed. I think it controls the ebrake but I'm not sure. Anyone know more about the situation and a possible solution?

sounds to me like its the rear ebrake shoes, but are you getting the noise all the time or only when you do the ebrake?

SCxxx have a caliper and a drum brake setup. rear brake bias when you use the regular brakes are all caliper based while hand brake is a drum brake.

i need new shoes also and the only place i found with them was the dealer!

It makes the noise when I'm driving (on the gas or coasting) but then goes away when i press the brakes. Still think it's the rear e-brake shoes? Please let me know cuz the only sounds I wanna hear are the sweet exhaust notes, the turbo spooling up, and the blow off valve! Thanks in advance...

can you tell what side of the car its coming from? you may want to check your wheel bearings as it could be coming from there too.

i wonder if your rear shoes are dragging?

Hi, I have an 92 LS400 and I hear the same thing but from the drivers side front tire. I thought it was the brakes so I took the tire out and realized I didn't know how to check if the breaks were still good so I put the tire back. When I was putting it back the tire spun around and it squealed so I spun it a few more times and sure enough it was the same sound as when I am driving. I have no idea what this is and any help would be much appreciated, THANKS!

i didn't know that the ebrake used a drum setup. i was thinking that the rear brakes were toast and was thinking i was going to have to replace them but this just saved me some money. how much do the ebrake pads normally cost?

I'm not sure but please let me know if you find out because if it turns out to be the drum brakes I wanna change them ASAP. Thanks...
