I got rid of the whining from my power steering by simply replacing the old dirty fluid with new fluid. Last year in the cold months, my power steering would whine in the mornings when the car was cold, then it would go away after driving around a bit. What I did was simply attach about 6 feet of clear tubing to a standard spray nozzle you'd find in a windex bottle and "suck" the old fluid out(spraying old fluid into a catch pan) while filling the resevoir with new fluid. You will need to do it a few times to assure that the fluid recirculates in the system and until the fluid you spray out is clean. Ever since I have done this, I have never had a whine from my power steering.

Going through this right now. Along side that little piece of plastic broke on my window motor.

OK - thanks all. I've had the PS pump replaced with a new Lexus part - $560, plus labor ($200). So far so good!! Turns out the rack was fine, so the first garage who told me it was shot were clearly trying to pull a fast one.

I've found a great Lexus specialist shop in the Philly area - owned by an ex-Lexus main dealer tech with 19 years experience. PM me if you'd like his details to get some work done. He specifically asked me NOT to post his details on the boards since he's not interested in providing free advice (which I can understand - he's gotta earn a living!). He is, however, interested in expanding his client base. My experience so far with his shop has been great. Honest, knows his stuff, reasonably priced - a good combo.

Glad you got it fixed... but I would have flushed the power steering first to see if it fixed the problem you were having. Just my .02

Lexus owners....change your PS fluid every couple of years! Go to the dollar store and buy a few turkey basters, extremely easy to just suck the old fluid out and replenish with some fresh PS fluid (cycle it thru the system several times), could save you hundreds of bucks.
