Smile Steering Problem

Hi guys, I own a 1993 SC300. For the past few months I've had steering problems with my car. When I turn the steering wheel to either direction, there is a delay in the reaction time from the steering wheel to the tires. It seems to get worse over time and obvious more dangerous, especially on the highway. I think it might be the tierods? can anyone tell me what my problem is and what I should look for? Thank you.

Check your steering rack bushings.

1. Turn on your engine
2. Have a buddy sit in the car and turn the steering wheel back and forth (10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position) continuously really quick
3. Take a look under the car at the steering rack. If it's moving, then your bushings are shot.

It's not uncommon for it to wear out by now, after all they're rubber.

Literally just had this problem 2 days ago. It was indeed steering rack bushings that needed to be done.

$48 and an hour later and it was fixed

I got polyurethane steering rack bushings from Carson Toyota for $48 and installed it myself. You don't even have to take the rack out, just drop it.

There is a DIY in the sub-forum
