I think this thread should be stickied, or merged with the other stickied coilover one.

Smile stiffness ratings

i've got a question for you coilover experts

example my JIC MAGIC FLT-A2 is 14/10

since it has 15 adjustment clicks for stiffness
and 00/00 is very cushy, but doesn't handle as well as stiffer settings
and 08/06 where i have it now seems pretty stiff, but handles incredible
and 15/15 i haven't tried.

at what setting is the 14/10 figured at?

this must be a universal question for all the coilovers with adjustable stiffness?

thanks ivan

My guess would be that's max. stiffness.

I think the dampening settings (clicks) has to do with the valving of the "shock" part of the coilover. The rating above are the rates of the "spring" part of the coilover. Aren't these spring compression rates independent of the rest of the coilover? Now the combination somewhat determines the ride quality but I don't think these rates are dependent on the dampening settings.

At least this is how I understand it.

okay i asked the jic -magic people here is what they told me

Regarding the chart, the chart that you've read is the
chart of the spring rates. It is the stiffness rate
of the springs. In you case is 14kg/mm in the front
and 10kg/mm in the rear. It does have connection with
the dampening rate, since springs and dampers is
working together. But, from the dampening settings,
it is pretty much a preference. Some people like it
soft, some people like it stiff.

HKS LS+ vs RS...

HKS (12:06:53 PM): the LS is disco'd in japan

HKS (12:06:56 PM): RS is softer though

HKS (12:08:10 PM): let me find the spring rates for the RS hold on

HKS (12:09:03 PM): 9 and 8 isnt bad at all

HKS (12:09:08 PM): the LS + is 10 and 9

HKS (12:09:12 PM): so the RS is softer

Insurance Group - 10 / 6

suspension is a freakng dark art though i'll tell you. Damping and preload all play a part. My Insurance at 10 / 6 out the box with damping low is as soft and supple as stock but not as floaty. stiffen damping up & add some preload and it gets much harder but 'crashier'.

i upgraded to 12 / 8 springs with little to no preload (amount you screw the bottom perch into the spring) and it felt softer than my 10 / 6s! so turns out Insurance obviously had quite a lot of preload from factory on the 10 / 6s making it feel stiffer. So i had to preload my 12 / 8s more, and now it is somewhat 'crashy' again. Really i needed 14 / 10.

but then you cant go too hard on springs without revalving your shocks, they should be matched or you'll wear out the shocks. Hence i think around +/- 20% is the most that's recommended to change, so that is why i only got 12 / 8s.
