Default What does this metal cover on top of rear shocks do?

I was looking at another thread and noticed this metal cover in the picture.

Does it absorb noise caused by the suspension or is it just simply a cover?

My 1998 SC300 does not have this cover.

I have them on my 93 sc300 and am assuming it reduces noise since there is a cushion material sandwiched between.

it's known as a 'dust cap' and it has nothing to do with keeping dust out of there...it's to keep the interior noise to a minimum on the 92-96 SC's...the later SC's have thicker strut mounts which do the job for you thus eliminating the need for the 'dust caps'.
