calipers may not always be marked, just think of this as a consistant rule:

with hydrolic systems:

bleed-> top
air goes to -> top

so....

if you are dealing with cooling system, the place the air comes out from will be the HIGHEST point of the system.

if you are handling brakes, the air needs to leave the top of the caliper.

if the OP had bled the calipers with a rotor stuffed between off the car and nipple pointing up- then installed on car, they would actually have worked fine, upside down.
