Default Home Depot - Rustoleum BBQ black

I just bought this stuff to do my calipers/rotor hats. This may be a dumb question, but is it OK to overpaint the rotor hats slightly towards the braking surface where the pads grip?? I'm guessing that after braking a few times this will go away?? I can't imagine how anyone can tape off a perfect circle on their hats.......

Any help/experiences would be great.....there's no way I'm putting shiny 20's on top of rusty rotors...lol

Default Should be okay

superjoe did that to his rotors, didn't even tape anything off. You should be okay. Do a search on xsuperjoex's posts and you'll find his exact method.

Johnny Mo - thanks man, I figured it would probably work. I'll be sure to search for suprerjoe's method (poor guy)

At least he's OK.

Thanx,
Eric

Check out the link below.

It details one way to paint rotor hats. I used this procedure when I did mine and it worked 'OK'. I was concerned using the brake pads as a 'paint remover' as suggested by some previous postings. Who knows if the paint would have contaminated or coated the pad surfaces.

It seems to me that taking a little more time and being precise is the way. My humble opinion.

Mr GS400,

Thanks for the link, that method is a great idea!!! Why didn't I think of that?? Actually I think I still might just do it superjoe's way for now, since my rotors are warped and will have to go soon anyway. I'll probably give my car brakes a new lease on life soon and just go with cadmium plated rotors!!!

dude.. those are *very* nice

how did you paint them? and what type of paint did you actually used? 'cause i'd assume those calipers would be hot and paint could come off..

I didn't tape mine off. Just used thick paper towels (like the kind they have in gas stations) and inserted it around until it covered the disc and brake line. After painting, pull out the paper towels, rotate the disc and wipe the overspray with carb cleaner or mineral spirits.

Default Painting Calipers

I may be late to this thread, but here is my $.02 on painting calipers.

I'm not familiar with the VHT or the other painting system that Bit mentioned. I used Folia Tec Caliper paint to do the calipers on my RX-7. Its a 2 part mix lacquer, that also comes with a cleaner to prepare the surface. You then paint it on, so there is no need to remove the caliper off of the car....

I then used Testors silver paint to paint the Mazda Logo on it.

Bottom line, it came out great, nice glossy finish, and it has held up great for the last 4 years.

On a side note, you don't want to over paint calipers, as they also dissipate heat, and if they are coked in mayn layers of paint, they will fail, most likely with the pistons locking up...

Hope this helps...

I just ordered another set of it in black for white GS...
