I have a 01 GS 300. It sat for a few weeks and had to jump to get it going. Started right up. When I stepped on brake to shift into reverse the car died instantly. Tried it again with jump and stepped on brake and same thing happened. Any idea of what problem can be. Did a kill type switch or relay fry when jumped car?
Thanks

how long did you let it run before hitting the brake?
if the battery is so bad, that the alternator can't charge it, then it could pull so much on the system that it dies, but i highly doubt thats what is happening. It sounds alot like what happens when the brake booster or check valve is bad, you can always clamp off the brake booster hose and see if it doesnt die. It sounds like you have a big vacuum leak.

This is true but since it only happens when the brake is pressed it points more towards a vacuum problem, brake booster, etc but yes to eliminate things take the battery to get tested and the alternator also and do the process of elimination.

I concur with the bad battery idea. I would check all your terminals and make sure they are very tight, then retest the car. Still dies? Take the battery in to get tested. On a side note - if it's dead and you are going to replace it, Costco's batteries are less expensive and offer 3 years of non pro-rated replacement. I went through several batteries from a parts place, all being defective. I bought one from Costco, and it's been working great.

brake booster does not use vacuum.
Sounds like alternator not charging and the battery is dead...
Get yourself a voltmeter. Alternator should be charging the battery at around 14 volts and the battery should hold at around 12.5 volts (car off). 12.7 is a fully charged battery
Good luck

our brake boosters are not vacuum assisted off the manifold, sorry didnt know that. It stiil could be a leak in a air hose or vacuum line somewhere, but like we all have said get the battery tested first, but dont forget to test the alternator also because the battery could be bad because the alternator is bad also. Seen it plenty of times at the shop i use to work at.
