Default Turning/resurfacing vs replacing rotors

Car has about 28k on the first set of pads, which need replacing, and I noticed that the rotors have a nice lip around them too now. Can these rotors be resurfaced or are they supposed to be completely replaced when doing pads like some other newer cars?

If it has a serious enough groove to actually require resurfacing, and it can be done without reducing it below minimum thickness, there's no reason you can't do so. Just be sure they do it on a centerless grinder, not a brake lathe.

I had to replace my rotors with the brakes. Dealership told me that the rotors could not be machined/resurfaced.

Ah, then they lied to you.

(Well, your specific ones might have been too worn to do so, but in general what they claimed certainly isn't true... and unless you've got a bad groove or they're worn below spec or something there's no reason to even resurface them let alone replace em).

Went to the dealer for a few other things and asked about getting the pads covered under the TSB and asked about the rotors, and while they'll cover the pads under the TSB we'd be responsible for the rotors (replacement or resurface) unless there is a rotor TSB as well.

Well, it's approx 2 hours to resurface the rotors which would equate to about $300! Craziness...

One of the local tire shops said they'd do it for $25 each, not sure if they use a centerless grinder or brake loathe though; I'll have to find out about that.

Anyone know of any good aftermarket rotors to use with OEM low dust pads? The pads as Sewell are like $54 for the front buy they don't appear to sell the rotors online.

Give em a call... they are a dealership, they sell everything, even if they don't have 100% of it listed on the website.

Why is that important? The reason I'm asking is because I'm gonna need to resurface mine.

Stealing the reply from an old Lobuxracer post as he worded it perfectly-

Just avoid a brake lathe, they leave a very coarse surface that will really shorten the service life of your new pads. Blanchard grinders are also called centerless grinders and it's what the factory used to put the initial finish on your rotors.

Is it hard to find a place with a centerless grinder?

How about purchasing rotors/pads from the local auto parts store? Kragen, pepboys, Autozone?

Or do these places carry too cheap of parts to be run on a lexus?
