Default Grinding brakes???

Today while driving I heard a rough scraping noise coming from the rear. When I got out to inspect it, I thought it was one of the mufflers draggin on the ground. I looked under the car and nothing was touching the ground. I got my g/f to drive it back and forth and realized it was coming from the rear driver side wheel. I think it might be my brakes, but wouldn't it make a high pitched squealing noise if I needed new ones, not a rough grinding noise?

Sorry guy, its your brakes. The grinding means you have no material on the pads and you are going metal to metal. You may need a new rotor if its ground in a lot. If you do it your self you can use the old rotors. Your pad life will suffer but they will work just fine.

You might need new rotors if it scraped bad. At minimum they need to be turned.

Default Are yall sure?

It doesn't do it all of the time, just sometimes. Is there any way I can check without taking off the rim/tire?

i got this same problem. I just spent almost $100, thinking it was my brakes. I changed my brakes today, my old ones we're still good, but i changed it anyway. I test drive my car and that damn grinding is still there! my wheels aren't loose, so its not my bearings.. can some one give me some advice?

parking brakes are built into the rear brakes. if you take off the rear rotors, you will find them there.

On a lot of brake pads there is a metal strip that scrapes on the rotor when the pad is getting low, i like to call it a squeeler. This scraping noise is to indicate to you that your pads are low. Just jack up your car, take off the wheel and take the brake pad out of the caliper. This way you can better inspect the pad and see how low it actually is.

If it is in fact low, change your pads and get your rotors turned.

Or if you do not want to do this yourself, just go get a brake inspection. at a shop A lot of places such as MIDAS and Firestone offer free brake inspections. They will tell you what you need and if you feel it is something you can do yourself (which it is in fact quite easy, with plenty of DIY's) just ask for your car back.

I'm trying to find out a problem on a friend's SC300. He has a grinding noise when coming to a near stop. The pads are brand new. I'm suspecting the rotors needs to be resurfaced. Then again it wont matter too much once the LS400 brakes are going in.

gsteg-

this is the problem i was having. i thought it was my brakes to. after i changed them, i was still getting a grinding sound. I did my research here, and it lead me to thinking that it was my wheel bearings. To make a long story short, i took it to a shop and it ended up being that my right wheel hub was loose, which caused my wheel bearings to get f'd up. Luckily, the mechanic i took it to had 3 sc's that he built and sold and knew exactly what to do. I also found out that my rear upper control arms need new bushings as well, dayam! Anyway, LPD auto dismantling gave me the whole complete hub which included the bearing for about $110. Compared to Glendale lexus which quoted me $320.
