They're barely half worn. Not even close to needing replacement. Here's what to look for:

If you can still see the slot in the middle, you're nowhere close to needing a new pad.

I believe they base it on the car mileage. It does not matter if you drive hard or not.

How so? Mileage has little to do with brake wear. How frequently and how hard you use the brakes has a lot to do with brake wear.

There is service record that you would get with the car if purchased brand new. Example 5000K miles (oil change) then some 100point inspection crap... 10K miles (oil change, air filter change) then another 100 point inspection.... 15K miles (oil change, air filter, brakes) then another 100 point inspection.... Thats what they follow or whatever. They can suggest to replace it and ofcourse its up to the owner to give the final word. It obviously does not look bad from the picture. Dealers can just recommend and will try to do so. They want to keep track of the vehicle's history and will possibly buy the car back and resell later.

The Lexus recommended service does not say replace brake pads. It says inspect and measure. The factory service manual gives service limits for pads and rotors in terms of minimum thicknesses. For the pads, it's 1mm. For rotors it's typically 4mm less than new.

Service advisers will often recommend premature brake replacements because it's good for their numbers. Some are honest, some are not. Independents are no different. This is why it pays to know at least a little bit about your car. You won't be bamboozled by some guy who thinks you'll just pay and not investigate.

Yeah thats part of it. Good for their numbers and so on. They do over estimate thinking it would need to be changed by the time the car gets back for service. Well, I do all of the service on my vehicle(s) if not i definitely do most. Some people just dont have the time and/or have the $$$ to drop it off at the dealer and just live with it. Again, they could recommend all they want and up to the owner if they take the bait .... I often tell friends to spend $200 on basic tools because it pays for itself. But they are idiots and one of those would rather pay someone to do the work for them. Well, they pay me instead hahahahaaa

thanx clublexus. for all the feed back.. but i did notice the click sound you get with the brakes... if u go from reverse to drive... and vice versa. i remember seeing that tread saying that its normal. i am thinking since mine are half worn thats why it makes the sounds?????

yea the dealer probably suggested a brake job since im at 30k miles. where in the hood is the brake fluid? i see it in the manual but i must be blind. to not see it.

Like always TY CL.
