Default Serious shaking problem

Okay guys, so we just got hit hard here in Maryland with like 2 blizzards in the SAME week (as I'm sure you all know by now) so my car sat under 3-4 feet of snow/ice for a whole week straight and I finally dug it out tonight. I started her up, and it had no problems starting (surprisingly, usually cars struggle a little bit when they sit in the freezing cold with that much snow on them for that long) but mine started right up as if it was already warm (which is great).

Okay anyway, so I let it warm up all the way for like 30 mins idling and then after finally getting it out of my parking space, I took it for a spin. I jump on the highway and get up to highway speeds (about 50-60 mph) and my car starts shaking like crazy. I felt like I was in a massage chair or something because this was ridiculous. My car has never done this before and it really freaked me out. Like I'm talking the wheels being ready to fall off shaking. Hardcore shaking lol.

The funny thing is though, when I drive at 40-45 mph or below, it does not shake at all. It rides normal driving through the city at slower speeds. It is only when I get up to highway speeds it does this.

Has anyone else had this problem before or know what it could be?

BTW, I have a 94 SC300.

Thanks in advance.

Get the wheels balanced and make sure nothing is stuck on them.

What kind of wheels do you have? Make sure your wheel weights didn't come off.

This, when your wheels are unbalanced, it makes the car shake really bad above certain speeds.

Yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. I have stock 16" 10 spoke Lexus wheels. I think they are the 95-96 10 spoke SC wheels. Maybe when I was shoveling around the tires I pulled one of the wheel weights off. It does sound practical though because I was doing A LOT of shoveling around the tires/wheels. I'll go get them remounted/rebalanced and let you guys know what happens. Thanks for the help!

There might be Ice / Snow stuck INSIDE your wheels.. this can throw your balance off by A LOT.. Trust me, we get a lot of snow here

Unbalanced wheels usually start shaking around 60 MPH. check the insides of your wheels for any stuck debris. If not, just get them balanced for like 5$ a piece. You didn't happen to use fix a flat recently did you?

^^^ +1

I had this same thing happen to my BMW. I was drifiting around the neighborhood late at night and the wheels got compacted with snow. Overnight the snow melted and re-froze. There was ice on the insides of the wheels you couldn't just "brush off." It made for horrible wheel imbalance and shaking.

I brought it into a heated garage for 30 minutes and problem solved

Everytime i let my car sit for more than a week I get a pretty good shake from the tires flat spotting. But it always goes away once the tires heat up.

snow and or ice inside the wheels will cause that, or sometimes ice can freeze along your axle or within your suspension components. my mom's camry felt like it was gonna blow up then the ice BROKE and i visibly saw it fly out from under the car on the highway and it was gone. no more shaking

Okay guys, so the shaking stopped now. It was doing it really bad last night when it was really cold out, but today during the day when it warmed up a little bit I think there might of been snow/ice stuck on the inside of the wheels/suspension components like you guys said. Because when it was warm earlier today it must of melted everything off it because I got on the highway again and got up to like 100 mph and it drove like it is supposed to. Nice and smooth the whole way. Of course, it decides not to do it anymore when I was on my way to the local tire shop to get them to look at it. The guy at the tire shop said he didn't have time to do it today and to come back tomorrow morning. So I set up an appointment tomorrow morning to go and let them remount/rebalance all 4 of my tires. And by the way, all 4 of my tires are Yokohama Avid V4S's and they are like 1.5 months old. They are practically brand new. No leaks/damage/dry rotting at all to my knowledge.

But, do you guys think I should still go to the appointment and get all 4 tires remounted/rebalanced or is it a waste of time/money? They said they'd do it for $20 for all 4.

What do you guys think?

$20 for dismounting, remounting, and rebalancing is worth it. If you do have water inside, at least you can dry it up so it doesn't freeze again.
