Could it be the ABS? I had a similar noise in an older Infiniti. I would suggest to try to pull the ABS relay and see if that makes the noise go away. Might work....but then again I could be way off base. GL

When I first heard his weird sound, it made me think of the ABS too. In that case the pedal would be pulsating I guess.

Also, the master cylinder and ABS unit are in the engine bay behind the dash cluster, so it's weird the sound seems to be coming from the steering column / pedal area...

Maybe it's the pump in the master cyl going bad.

Thanks for the replies. It's difficult to really locate the sound, because it's there only when driving and then stopping. When speeds drops to around about 3 mph the sound starts (when braking very gently). When stopping normally it makes the sound when you really stop. ONLY in these occasions! Not during driving, nor when starting engine or whatever. After the sound you have to built up some speed (to +20 mph) for it to occur again.
Indeed it sounds like a pump pressurizing something. I wanted to flush the brake system at the dealership, maybe it is an airbubble inside the pump (?).

Hey Martijn,

Here's a link that I found recently. It's intended for the JZS147, but I found that it also applies to my 99 GS300. It's an Q&A regarding the brake booster/master cylinder.

http://www.jzs147.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2273

When you turn your key to ignition (without starting), can you hear the brake booster pumping? It should be pumping to build up pressure. Is this noise similar to the noise you're experiencing when braking?

No, it only occurs (after) driving. I hear other pumps, but they are very silent.

But this link could be interesting, I will look if it can be those rubber mount bushings. Thát would be an easy fix!

Off topic: 2 warnings about brakes I heard and read and I want to share:
1) mecanic told me to never push the brake pedal to the floor when bleeding (or whatever). I don't know it's really bad...
2) read this (post Smiffy) when replacing brake pads (I assume it's also applicable for GS300)

Good find on the brake pad replacement procedure... I wasn't aware of the risk of damaging the accumulator.

Sure!
No, they're all black (I'm not German ). Camera was on nightshot, that's why it looks strange. Anyway, sharp eyes!

From a private message conversation I let you all know that there's at least 1 person who has the same noise. His pedal goes to the floor (mine not) and he recons it's the master cylinder.

Update form the other persons problem:
Sounds good, when I took it to a mechanic, he removed the green fuse located underneath the hood and the noise stopped but I could still feel the vibration slightly, it's weird I dunno what it is
My reaction:
"Wow, I would never do that! This is really dangerous because you are tampering with the brake system.
Maybe I'm wrong (let's see on the forum)."

I never herd this type of noise before but i also have a problem with either the disc or the bearings. I have 1 question about the bearings, if they go bad what type of noise will it make or what will happen !!!

Martijn I got it tested, came up with codes C1251 "Pump motor is locked/open circuit in pump motor ground, and ABS control module C1223 Control System Malfunction which pretty much points to the brake booster pump motor, so I'm going to go ahead and get that replaced and keep you posted.

I know there are many malfunctions possible in the braking system, but yours is definitely different than mine! E.g. my lights don't come on and my braking is completely normal (well, except for the noise).
But I am curious if it helps when you replace the parts, so let us know.
