Default Master Brake Cylinder / Rebuild Kit?

Ok, I searched and didn't find anything that answered my questions.

My 2002 GS430's master brake cylinder with ABS and booster has gone bad and is throwing a few error codes. The pedal also sticks but the brakes performance otherwise is fine.

Can I get a rebuild kit that will get this back to normal? Sewell has one for about $90, how do I know for sure that this is what I need?

I know a new one is running $2,100, I didn't log in to the website to see what the web / CL discounted price would be, well, because I don't want to spend that much on the car as I only drive about 500 miles a month and I don't think I'll own it in 6 months.

Anyone with experience rebuilding these?

I'm suprised that there are even rebuild kit for it. What's included with this kit? at those prices, I would go with rebuild kit. just make sure that rebuilding it would solve the problem..

Thanks, the codes that I have are:

Main Brake Master Cylinder Trouble Codes: C 1223 ABS Malfunction, C 1233 Open or Short, C 1242 Open Circuit and C 1246 Master Cylinder Pressure Malfunction.

Sakataj, where is a rebuilt available from?

Do you know how did yours went bad? They usually dont go bad to be honest. Did you ever changed your brake fluid? Does your brake pedal sinks to the floors when applied pressure?

I really dont know how it went bad. I bought the car in 05 with 39k on it and now it has 91k (as of this morning), have taken it to one guy the whole time I have owned it, who is well known and is a lexus master tech with his own shop. The brake fluid would have been changed when it was due based on scheduled maintenance, which I perform on time, every time.

The pedal sticks, when I stop at a light, I cant feather the brakes in and out normally when stopping because of the sticking. I have to pop the pedal back up with my foot when leaving a stopped position, or just push the gas and have the pedal pop on its own.

The rebuild kit will not help you. If anything, just swap the ABS control box and ABS unit, this is where the malfunction is. You can get the Cylinder checked for internal leakage.

thanks for the responses, I'll look into the ABS units...

I did look for used master cylinder units by the way for anyone else out considering it, everything I found through junk yards was between 150 and 350 bucks shipped to my door, unfortunately, they are all off of 85k+ cars, so it doesnt make sense seeing mine went out at 90K...

Just a guess... I think you got air in your system, a restriction or the pedal itself.

You Lexus Mechanic should have Techstream scanner to figure this problem.

Mole, my 98 gs400 just started having a sticky brake pedal too. It doesn't sound like it is as bad as yours yet though, but when I take my foot off the brake at a light, every once in awhile the pedal will stick and pop up a second after I release it instead of following my foot up like it should. Also my ABS pump runs every few minutes for about 5-10 seconds (building acumulator pressure i assume). Any more info on what is the failed part for the pedal?

Hey XL, I haven't gone any farther on getting my problem solved, but for me I think ****-adkt's advice is where I'll continue once I get the time to complete. I just barely drive the car at this point, my biggest problem with the sticky pedal is not realizing the pedal is stuck and coming back to a dead battery.

I would get the codes read and then either post them here or do some research about what they mean to figure out where to go.

Add me to the list of people with a sticky brake pedal. 99 GS400 with 171,000 miles. I have the exact same feeling in the pedal as one of the other posters. After coming to a stop (or when feathering the brake pedal), sometimes when I lift my foot off the pedal, the pedal does not follow my foot up and sticks for a second.

Is this definitely the sign of a master cylinder going bad? Could it be something else as simple as dirty brake fluid?

unfortunately I'm still dealing with this issue... so far the possibility for correcting this is:

buy a new master cylinder (whole unit) for about $2200.00 from Lexus... I think the sewell discount will work but you can't buy the unit online and clublexus discounts are only for online I was told, not phone in orders.

I was told by my mechanic that the issue cannot be corrected with a rebuild kit.

buy a used one from a junk yard... mostly high mileage units so far and the cost is still close to $700.00 before tax and shipping...

does any one have any other suggestions? I would like to get this resolved so I can forget about it.
