so my car is about to hit 40k and I was wondering when a brake job (brake pads, rotors..anything else?) is advised. I have a 08 Lexus is350. thanks for the input

It shouldnt be by mileage... just take off ur wheels and take a peek... if the pads are too thin then just change it... should be a quick easy job... avoid dealership unless its free...

Damn...I just had to do my front pads at 15,500 mi cuz they were down to 1mm. You guys must drive in parking lots all day.

Yeah brakes don't really need to be replaced by a specific mileage. There's a lot of different variables when it comes to brakes, driving style being the main one. Also depends where you drive too and how often. Just gotta replace them when they wear down enough.

brake fluid is recommended to be done every 30k.

brake pads are totally dependent on your driving style, but I see averagely they are around every 30-50k miles.

rotors are also totally dependent on your driving habits, but I see rotors lasting to 70k (basically twice the life of your brake pads). Rear rotors will probably last a good 120k.

Again, its all on your driving habits and a better check is to physically look at them yourself

Is it a hard job? And do you have to bleed the brakes after? I herd it's like some type of electricly bleed or somthing is that right. And are you always supposed to change the shims Cuase the dealer quated

$500 for what???? Geez, what a rip. Purchase the pads you want, jack up one side of the car, remove wheel, remove pin/bar across top of pads, pull pads out of the top of caliper, depress the pots/cylinders, install new pads/shims (or old OEM shims), install pin/bar, install wheel, lower vehicle. Duplicate process on the other side. Break-in pad according to the directions. OEM vs aftermarket performance pads have differing procedures...but all easily done in 10 minutes or less.
