Brake rotor screws - are they necessary?
I had my brake rotors replaced recently and the mechanic had quite a bit of trouble getting the two screws out that hold the rotor. After he finally got them to budge and replaced the rotors, he didn't replace the screws. He said that they aren't necessary, and they are only there to hold the rotor while the wheel is removed, and once the wheel is replaced, the lug nuts will hold the rotor.
While that makes sense, but what about centering the rotor on the hub?

Never seen the 10 spoke 17" but I have the 5 spoke 17" and they're hub centric. If I put a wheel onto my car without lug nuts and lift the wheel vertically, there will be no play at all even though none of the studs are touching the wheel.
Can't see why Toyota would want to go with lug centric for the later models. They're inferior and are more prone to being off-centered. Plus they introduce more stress on the studs since they're now required to handle more vertical load. At least with hub centric, some of the stress is relieved by the hub.
