my opinion is the brake pads, its what our brake component made, suspended of what they call so every time you make a first reverse and put brake on it will sound and if you put it drive and put brake it will sound again but as soon as you continue driving,it will disappear unless you make reverse and apply brake again, its not safety issue as per the tech that i talked to but its annoying and the best solution is to replace the pads and the kits, there's some thread already on this that they put some grease on the part that clunk but its only temporary..again this imo.

I am having the exact same issue as you.. And great description on the noise because I was debating to post this issue up in CL as well but couldn't find the right descriptions.. However, this happened to me ever since hitting a big pot hole.. Thought it was the CV joint.. but your description sounds identical.. Have you recently hit any major pot holes?

Damn dude I knew it, yes actually I have and I think I might have a slight bent rim as well, something is causing a vibration around 40mph but that's another topic. I am glad you understand what I mean, truthfully I thought my description sucked lol every one thinks its the pads, when was the last time you replaced yours?

lol, Well since you also hit a major pot hole, I have a feeling it's something way worst than just changing brake pads. The pot hole I hit during summer dented both my front and back wheel. I changed my brake pads 2 months after and the noise was still there..
However, since it's winter up here in Canada, I switched back to my stock 17's and to be honest, either I adapted to the popping noise or the noise is actually starting to disappear.
I did glance at the link birador provided and it might work because it does seem like similar issues.
BTW, the slight dent on your wheel is definitely one of the reason causing the vibration at 40mph.. I was going through the same issue after i dented mine...

I may have the same issue, kinda. I've noticed if I back into a parking spot, the brakes or the steering wheel or the brake pedel seem to make a odd pop noise at times. I don't think it's each time I reverse. I guess it could be and I just don't notice it all the time. I did not think much of it though. Mine only does it when I reverse and it's not to loud. Sounds almost like air.
My car's a 2011 with 4k miles and no mod's to the suspension/brakes/tires/wheels etc.

someone else experiencing the same problem over in the 2gs forums.. the following is a comment made by someone and the reason I post it is because it is a symptom I also have...
this is begining to become frustrating... i suffer from this too on my 2gs, but i only hear it when i back up in the morning and brake, after that i doesnt make that noise again till the next morning cold start. if someone can figure this out it would be so nice.

Sounds to me sort of like pad shift. I work at a lexus dealer and we get customers coming in alot with concerns about a popping noise when they first apply the brakes when in drive then reverse. If this is what the issue is it isn't anything that is serious as long as you can deal with the shifting noise.
