Default Question about brake dust TSB

I am trying to have Lexus replace my 2008 brake pads under the TSB for brake dust... I get a crazy amount of dust, so I would like the newer low dust pads. I emailed my service adviser getting them replaced and he said this, "BRAKE TSB WILL NOT NOT APPLY IF DUE FOR BRAKES—ALSO IF THEY HAVE BEEN CHANGE IN THE PAST. "

I was just in the shop two months ago getting an oil change and they printed some report that showed the pads were still in "green" status, both measuring 8mm thickness. So, I don't think I am due for replacements yet.

What might hurt my chances, are that I can see they were replaced by Lexus in the past:

Dealer Reported 02/11/2010 Hendrick Lexus 18686 0537739 PADS, BRAKE (FRONT) - REPLACE AND RESURFACE ROTORS OFF-VEHICLE / ALL

So here is my question: If these were replaced by Lexus previously, shouldn't they still qualify for the TSB replacement?

Thanks!

If they were replaced under the TSIB then they wouldn't qualify.

Since they're still spitting out enough dust for you to notice though one must assume they replaced em with the high dust ones again.

Shame they resurfaced the rotors though, waste of good rotor metal.

So are you suggesting that if they did indeed replace them with the high dust ones, they should be replaceable under the TSB/warranty?

Yeah, saw that they resurfaced the rotors That was prior to me owning it...

Thank you for the response!

Yeah man good luck with that. I tried to have mine replace but had no luck. I just replaced my pads OEM low dust ($70). Sewell ftw.

Certainly, since replacing with high dust pads doesn't actually fix the problem.

the problem is the OEM (from the factory) pads cause too much dust.

The fix is they give you free low dust pads.

It shouldn't matter if it's the first or second set of those factory pads on there, especially since you didn't own the car when they were put on.

(now if you had aftermarket 3rd party pads you'd be outta luck).

Keep in mind that the TSB bads are "low" dust, not "no" dust. I had them, and still got plenty of dust on my wheels--probably at about 1/2 the rate a the standard pads.

I've got to disagree... it's massively less.

Clean all 4 wheels, then drive.

Old pads= filthy after 2 days. Significantly blacker than rear wheels.

New pads= barely dirty after a month.... like no dirtier at all than the rears.

OP- How many miles do you have, and what is the Date of first use(DOFU) from the original owner? The TSB covers it for 4 years/50k miles basic warranty after the DOFU, as long as the pads are not low and are OEM from what you are stating.

I was under the impression the low dust replacement pads were only going to get done if you didn't wait too long after purchasing the vehicle new. Back when this all first broke, mostly everyone was told to have them changed under the first 5000 miles of service. Otherwise, the dealer knew people were doing it when pads were worn and were trying to avoid having to pay for new pads altogether.
FWIW, my low dust pads barely give off any dust at all. It takes a good weed's worth of driving to see anything on there. The originals were horrible.

Introduction
Some Lexus vehicles are equipped with high-friction front brake pads, specifically designed for
superior braking performance and response. As a result, under certain conditions, it is possible for
the customer to experience a larger volume of brake dust on the wheels.
For customers who find these characteristics objectionable, an alternative brake pad material
has been developed. As with any change made to brake pad material, braking performance and
feeling may be altered and could possibly be reduced under certain driving conditions as a result
of their usage.
These alternative front brake pads have now been made available as service parts.

I am at 49,500 miles and the delivery date was 12/26/08, so I should still be under the factory warranty. Almost up, hence trying to get the pads (and rear view mirror) replaced

When I had service two months ago, the pads still measured 8mm, so they don't NEED replacing... just annoyed at the dust and would like them changed. I can see in the service history that they were replaced by previous owner, but with the amount of dust I see, I highly doubt it was with the low dust pads. My front pads definitely get dirty faster than the rear and far quicker than I would expect.

Thanks everyone for the feedback... should be taking it in on Monday or Tues, glad I have some backing for my "discussion" with the service adviser

heard back from the dealer today... they won't cover the brake pad TSB since the pads on the car are not the original factory pads. He said the TSB was limited to the original factory equipment

At least the pads are cheap... i'll just swap them myself when i'm due.

I thought you had the OEM high dust ones on there? (that is they were replaced prior to you getting the car, but still with OEM high dust pads?).... if that's the case the TSIB ought still apply (and I'd contact Lexus if they're still unwilling to do it).

If there's 3rd party pads on there then yeah, it wouldn't be covered.
