Default Wheel fitment question...

Hey, fellas!

I finally decided to upgrade my stock 16'' wheels to 17'' SSR Competitions, 8.5'' front, and 9.5'' rear, both with 42mm offset.

The thing is, the guy at Tirerack said that if I order 275/40/17 for the rear, as I want, they guarantee that it will fit properly (rub, etc.). The widest they guarantee in the rear is the 265/40/17.

Has anyone had any experience with rubbing fenders on GS4XX(preferably, with the same wheel)?

Any info is appreciated.

Sorry....
Obviously, I meant that they will not guarantee fitment with 275s.

umm.... will till gs4will tell you if the offset is good enough. the tire size is good, i have 275 too and i have no problem, it never rubs. but again it depends on the offset of your wheels.

You can click the 'edit' button for your post and fix it.

275/40 should fit no problem at all. I have 275-35-18.

I'd seriously recommend getting staggered 18s instead of 17s though - the 17s probably won't look big enough. I'll check the look of the rim you've chosen. If there's any lip, the 17s are GOING to look too small.

In looking for info/pics about your rims, I came across this. Granted it's a small set of negative anecdotes, but you might want to look at them, particularly if you live in a pothole-infested area.

Thanks, man! I'll keep it in mind

Hell, I would go with the 19''s, but there are 2 problems with going bigger than 17'' (IMO):
1) Looks: to compliment the decreased tire wall height, you have to decrease the wheel-to-fender gap beyond what my Eibach ProKit's 1.2 inches can do.

2) Performance: real-world fast street driving (my goal) won't go too well with 18+ (I am thinking flat tires, bent wheels, bent suspension pieces, etc.) I hit a 2X2 piece of wood on the freeway on-ramp at 60 mph at night (with my 16'' stocks). It made a hell of a thud, but did not break anything. I believe if I had 18s on there, I would be tirerack's repeat customer by now.

Thanks for the negative stuff pointer: I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is a freak Miata occurrence on the smaller rims. I would also ask the salesperson to elaborate on that before purchasing.

Currently, I ordered one 17''X9.5'' with 275/40/17 to see how it fits. I'll put it on, put a couple of people in the back seat, a couple of bodies in the trunk and see if it rubs.

I'll report on my findings, just in case if anyone's interested.

Best regards,

I would have to agree. If you are going to spend the money to upgrade I would go with atleast 18's. IMO, 18's look much better then 17's and you don't have to worry about them bending.

Well, then...
God bless America! Looks like I've got nothing to worry about.

Thanks a lot, guys! This kind of information is very difficult to come by without your input. Very much appreciated.

Regards.
