Tie Rod / Rack and Pinion
My driver side tie rod has some play in it, dealer says tie rod is bad but since the damage is in the rack and pinion unit the whole unit needs to be replaced since they are not serviceable. Rack and Pinion is $2100 new, i see rebuilt ones on web. Question is a rebuilt one ok to use? Also is it possible rebuild my broken rack and pinion?

Dealer is effing nuts in this scenario... Assuming you have a 2IS, Napa has inner tie rod ends available for $48-$72 depending on warranty / quality... Even paying retail markup, we're talking less than $100 for the part at a retail repair shop, plus probably $80-$120 for labor... Outer tie rod ends are $78-$91 each and less labor...
Unless the rack is bad, don't replace it, replace the tie rod ends - they are serviceable separately...

Took it to another shop and said damage tie rod is too deep into the rack and pinion and it has to be replaced. Anyone have any dealings with rebuilt rack and pinions?
