Default Removing damaged screen from PS reservoir

Has anyone successfully done this? Mine is in pretty bad shape but I haven't been successful in removing it. At this point I'd choose no screen over a damaged one that may or may not be blocking flow.

I have tried fishing it out with several tools, all with no success. Even if I could pick it up, the pieces are too big to get out the top. I haven't removed reservoir yet - is there easier access on the bottom?
