Default Springs damaging shocks?

Hi,

I've wanted to install lowering springs but my friends have been telling me that lowering your car with springs is bad because they will damage your shocks over time.
Would it be better to go for coilovers? I'm not going to go on the track or anything, just want the lowered look and coilovers seem to be priced way higher than springs.

Thanks
