Default Klunking Noise in Rear

Hi All,

Just wanted to quickly share an experience. I was getting a loud klunk everytime I went over the slightest of bumps. I immediately thought it was the dreaded control arm ball joint. I backed my car up on ramps and looked at the ball joint, and sure enough, the boot was torn. Crap, so I go online and grab a used upper control arm that looks in good shape from pics.

I jack the car up and take off the wheel. I grab the rotor at 12 o clock and 6 o clock and try to teeter-totter it back and forth. But, there was no play! Then, I immediately grab the rotor and it easily lifts up and down (no shock damping). It ended up being the damping nut on the top of the coilover.

There is a 17mm nut in the center on the top of the strut mount just beneath the rear speaker in the trunk. Pull back the trunk lining, and you will see it (if you have coilovers). It wasn't even finger tight. After I tightened it up, it takes bumps like it should!

So, if you have coilovers and are getting a klunk noise, then this is the easiest thing to check first.

But, now I still have to replace the ball joint boot..
