Need to replace shocks
Sup guys, in a bit of a dilemma here...
Not looking to break the bank as this car is my DD and I will most likely just run her until it goes to the scrap yard. 98 GS400 with 100k...
I need to replace the shocks, and I know just replacing shocks will be a pain in the *** since you need to compress the spring and blah blah blah. Since I'm down there, I was thinking of lowering springs since I'll be taking them out.
Now... I don't want a slammed look, I live in MA and the roads here are bleeping horrible, but I would like to get rid of that fender gap.
should I just go with coilovers? if so, what brand? Recommendations? links?
I heard most coilovers don't last long but what if I were to go with a Tein basic.... 2" drop all around would like nice on my stock chrome 17's/
I need something that will be reliable and last long.

seems like you want something reliable, cost effective and long lasting. That only describes OEM! If money is an issue I wouldnt be thinking about lowering the car especially if you dont have perfect roads. The GS drives the best in stock form. But good luck if and when you decide to lower it. Just dont say I didnt warn you when your lowered car starts eating through parts and costing you more then you expected.

I'm in the same boat but won't be upgrading this year. My conclusion after looking over the threads is... it all depends on what floats your boat.
There are a lot of threads about "stancing" a car or putting bigger wheel/tire combos. These can make the GS look amazing. Like a modern day GT racer. They bring the shape back into proportion and definitely eliminate the fender gap. The GS can take some mods but wear/tear issues will be your friend here if you want to dd.
I'm leaning towards lowering springs/matched shocks for just over an inch drop on factory chromes (I have these right now too, riding on Michelin AS3 Pilots - amazing handling/great ride).
