Default I removed center nut on top of strut while still on car...is this bad??

I am trying to replace front struts on my 07 is350. This is my first time doing this. I got to the point where I removed the nut and bolt from the bottom of the strut, but i could not free the strut because of tension. So i removed the nuts at the top (even the center one) thinking this would help. Still stuck. After research, i saw that i was not suppose to remove the center nut, but no one ever explained why or what to do when that happens. What should I do now to finish removing the strut?

Put it back on before moving forward. Do not continue with it removed.

Are you using a spring compressor? If not, your first time doing this may end up being your last. The springs are under extreme pressure from the weight of the car. If that thing flies loose it could hit you causing severe injury or death. To remove your struts I would suggest the following information. Follow these steps:

1. Remove lugs nuts from the front wheels.
2. Jack up the car
3. Place jack stands at the jack points of the car to support the vehicle.
4. Remove wheels from car.
5. Use springs compressors and compress the spring (use 2 compressors for each strut)
6. Remove the nut and bolt from the bottom of the strut where it connects to the lower control arm.
7. Open the hood of the car.
8. Loosen the 3 nuts on the strut mount where it bolts to the car.
9. Remove strut from the car.
10. Remove the nut from the top of the strut.
11. Remove the strut mounting plate from the strut assembly.
12. Slide the spring off the top of the strut.
13. Get new strut and slide the spring onto the new strut.
14. Remove nut from new strut and place mounting plate on new strut.
15. Place nut back on top of mounting plate and tighten nut down to strut.
16. Take strut and insert back into car.
17. Loosely tighten the 3 nuts on the mounting plate securing it to the car.
18. Twist the bottom of the strut so that it aligns with the mounting bracket on the lower control arm.
19. Insert nut and bolt into bottom of the strut.
20. Tighten the 3 nuts on the top mounting plate holding strut into place.
21. Tighten the lower nut and bolt that hold the strut into the bottom of car (the lower control arm).
22. Loosen and remove the spring compressors from the strut.
23. Put wheels back on the car and loosely tighten the lug nuts.
24. Jack up the car and remove jack stands.
25. Lower vehicle back down
26. Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern while making sure to torque to spec (I do not know the correct torque amount).
27. Take for a test drive.

I got it off. The strut is so bad that the piston rod would not even go back up. Also i bought pre assembled struts with springs so i wouldn't have to use a spring compressor

^Smart move on purchasing the spring/shock combo. Most people are afraid of spring compressors...for good reason.
