I did the same thing, used Autozone high temp brake caliper gloss black paint. I didnt use any primer or clear coat I just took rubbing alcohol and wiped the caliper down really good...cause I was lazy and was curious to see how it would hold up.. 5 years later it held up nice, but 2 years ago a "pro detailer" used acid to wash my wheels and some of the paint got stripped (small specks). Here's how they look now, you can see the top of the caliper has the specks that got stripped from the "detail":

I used G2 Blue. It's been on there close to 4 years now. Looks the same.
Hosed off with water, sprayed with citric cleaner, scrubbed with brush and water, wipe with lacquer thinner and paint.

Question #2IS Caliper Painting (Clear Coat Question)

(Sorry for the typo in the title, supposed to be "painting", not sure what happened there)

I have read a few threads on CL and other auto forums and watched some YouTube videos on painting calipers, and one thing I noticed is that there is a lot of disagreement over the clear coat step. Some people say if you put a decal on you need to clear coat over it to protect it, some people say it's unnecessary, I lean towards believing the former. However, after researching for hours and contacting manufacturers I am still not sure which clear coat to get.

Single-stage clear coats that are rated for high temperatures (VHT clear) apparently turn yellow eventually:
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...lear-coat.html
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...es-yellow.html

I saw it recommended here that 2K clear coats (SprayMax is mentioned) hold up better:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...alipers-4.html

However, after contacting SprayMax they said that their 2K clear coat has a maximum operating temperature of only 100°C and isn't suitable for calipers.

Has anyone had any experience with a clear coat that doesn't yellow and can hold up to the brake system temperatures?
Also, would the same paints/clear coats be suitable for a rotor hat?

VHT caliper paint is junk you'll get better results with engine enamel. But it won't be chemically resistant either, get some brake fluid on it and buh-bye. Have to use a 2-stage like this

If there is a high temp clear coat 2-stage I'd also like to know about it.

I see G2 mentioned often, but I haven't seen any complaints about the VHT caliper paint as long as the surface is clean and multiple coats are applied. G2 costs 5x as much ($13 vs $65) and isn't available locally so I would end up paying about $100+ for G2 total in order to get it here in my state. Is there something significantly better in the G2 paint that VHT doesn't have?

I've used VHT is sucks brake fluid takes it right off. The silver especially doesn't last. It is worth using good paint since the prep work is way harder than the actual painting. Might be a Canadian only thing, this paint is great for calipers even though not specifically for "high heat". Which unless you track a car doesn't happen to your calipers.

FWIW - if you plan to paint 4 calipers with G2, you need to have your hustle on if you mix the whole thing at once as it begins setting. Sorry I don't recall the time but I'm guessing it was north of the 2 hour mark whereby fine strokes are no longer possible. I would also advise a brush per caliper. So far no issues with brake fluid eating the product.

OP my fleabay white Lexus stickers have been on for 3 years now. Still white, not peeling, no clear coat.

As best I can tell, @Jay2IS had his post inadvertently deleted, then it came back and merged with an existing thread.

Jay, I went to edit my last post and found your entire thread vanished! I wrote the mods and walla, look, it's back!!!

Hope this helps!
