Opening the hatch

Opening the hatch
I purchased a Lexus UX 250 H about three months ago. I was led to believe that the vehicle had a kick sensor for the hatch. But it wasn’t working when we were trying it. The dealer told me that the sensor probably needed to be replaced and that when they did the final inspection at purchase, it would be fixed or replaced. When I took possession of the vehicle, I was informed that it didn’t have the kick sensor and would need to be opened manually. It was disappointing, but not a deal breaker. However, one day when I came to put parcels in the car, I noticed there was no button on the remote to open the hatch. I thought that was bizarre. When I reached my destination, I came to open the hatch from inside the car, but couldn’t find a button This purpose. Every single vehicle I’ve ever had over the last four decades have had an interior button to pop open the trunk. Considering the vehicle is classified as a luxury vehicle I cannot for the life of me understand why they wouldn’t be an interior button and remote access to open the hatch. Could someone explain to me why this is?

You didn't specify a year or model of your car, but the power rear hatch is probably an option. The rear hatch opener button isn't visible when sitting in the front seat; next to the gas fill access button. Took me a while to find it, or I could have read the manual.

and yes I have the button also next to the fuel door. Never bothered to check really but never thought I had one.

You may still have the hands free back door operation, and it may be turned off to prevent unintentional operation. It can be turned off or on using the multi-information display starting under "Vehicle Settings", going down to "Kick Sensor" (Page 125 in my owner's manual.)

it must have been an option (which I find bizarre for what’s typically a base standard feature) because there’s a space for a button next to the gas tank door release button, but no active button installed. And no button on remote either.
I LOVE my car, but there just a couple of quirks that annoy me. This is definitely one of them.

The Power Rear Door w/Kick Sensor "PB" was a $550 option on the 2023 UX 250h.
Was included in the Premium group - Sunroof, heat/vent seats, rain sense wipers, auto-
dimming mirrors and various trim upgrades for $2460. Without it you can only trigger
the button by the rear license plate to open. Page 116 of the Owner's Manual describes
this only operation when not equipped with Power Rear door, no dash button and no
remote fob button.

The kick sensor was something I really wanted when I got my 2024 UX 250h, so I was happy when a car my dealer had coming in had this feature, but I have to say it's kind of disappointing. I find it finicky, have to kick in just the right place. But even more annoying, to me anyway, is that you have to have the fob with you or it doesn't work. Seems like it should work if the button on the hatch works. If my car is unlocked in my garage, I can use the button on the hatch to open it whether or not I have the fob with me, but I can't use the kick sensor - annoying when my hands are full with things I want to load in the hatch. First world problems, I realize.
