The sub itself is not likely to be "sloppy", but the midbass presence or lack of is what you are actually hearing.
Try building an audio system from the viewpoint of reproducing an accurate front sound stage as opposed to slapping in a sub, and you'll get the detail and articulation you are after. To do this you must focus on the image created by the front drivers, and go as low as reasonable in the front (say 60hz unclipped.) Then, simply blend the subwoofer and time align it (the sub is WAY back there in the trunk, afterall.) Should sound fantastic.
