why not 245/40/19?

ur not saying that u can fit a 40 tire using 20s ru?...
I've made up my mind.. im gonna go with 19x8.5 +35 all around with 245/40/19 tires... then once a camber kit comes out ill go with staggered look.. =)
BITKAHUNA - nice!!!! you think ull be able to put a 19x95 or 19x10 in the front so ull have dual lip action?..

OK, but the rears will be inset which I don't care for (could do H&R spacers though maybe). Are you worried about early tire wear in the back? If so, you should be more worried about it in the front.
You can't put 9.5 or 10" rims in the front and I have no interest in such heavy rims up front anyway, plus I wanted big front brakes so I only get a 1.5" lip there (although it looks a bit less because of the high disc fitment). You can get a 2" front lip with high disc though. My rear lip is about 3".

im worried about tire wear in the front.. and what do you mean by inset? is it when the wheel is too much in the car like how it is stock? but isnt the +35 offset aggresive enough?
what determines the size of the lip? the width of the rim? the "disc"?
what would it take for me to get a 3inch lip all around?

My 8.5" front rims are +38. I've never tried putting one of them on the back but I bet it would look inset. A +35 you're considering is only 3mm ( .12 inch) further out. The look does depend some on the wheel design though - flat spokes like the factory 17s don't look THAT inset but if you're going for a huge lip then they will look even more inset.

This article about offset might help:

As far as getting a 3 inch lip all around, I don't know if that's possible. GSTRANCE has the largest front lips I've seen on Zauber Gettin's. Looks awesome.

OK how bout this scenario.
19x9.5 rim in the back with +45offset and wrapped in 275/40/19?
will this rub?
i want to go 40 all around if possible
245/40/19 in the front with +35offset 19x8.5 and 275/40/19 in the back with +45 offset 19x9.5.??
or is it better to do it like BITKAHUNAs setup?

it really depends on the sidewall height

Bean says you can run 265 on 8.5" rims and that might be possible, but you DON'T want to put 265's in the front wheel wells - I'm almost positive they'll rub a lot, no matter what offset you have.

WHY? the '40' is a *percentage* you know, right? 40 is the percentage of the width that the sidewall height is. So 40% of 275 is a whole lot bigger sidewall height than 40% of 245.
Why do you want to do this instead of 35 series on the back?

and bit is right again too, mounting 265 in the front is like suicide, not only rub, i wonder if it will even hit the suspension. and technically from what i read, 245 on 8.5, 275 on 9.5, these are the best setup

ok, you CAN use 245/40/19 and 275/35/19 on the GS, coz' that's just the same diameter as getting 20s with 245/35/20 and 275/30/20. the ride would be a lot better and will probably protect the rims more. however 35 and 30 in 19 isn't that bad. i have had that for so long, hit 3 potholes before and the wheels are still strong. it's all about how careful you drive and how much pressure you put in. if you put in 32psi, even with 40 and 35 you are going to kill it anyway. with 40+psi you have better protection.
and like i said, 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 just won't work. it's like putting 21s on the GS. bad idea. rubbing has to do with a lot of stuff, offset, tiresize, etc...
