Question

I'm replacing my 17" Potenzas; already crap at 13,500 miles. I've heard good things about the Dunlop SP Sport 9000's and the Nitto NT555 Extremes. Any experiences?

Thumbs up Nittos

David - I've had my Nittos for about 15k miles & really like them! While they may not have the grip of my old Pilot Sports, the ride is excellent & I'd say I still have another 10-15k left on the Extremes. I had Dunlops on my 'Vette & found them to be almost as good ( performance-wise ) as Michelins but got a bit more mileage out of them.

Question Nittos

Hi Gene:

How's the noise level on the Nittos? The stock 17" Bridgestones are really noisy.

Default Not Bad At All!

David - The Nittos are quieter than the Michelins but I've never run Bridgestones to compare them. Strangely enough, the 18" Nittos ride better than the 17" Michelins - someone told me that it's because the Nitto sidewalls are softer than those of the Pilot Sports. When I pressed my thumb into each set of tires, the Extremes did seem to have a softer sidewall & that'd explain the better ride despite the small sidewall.

Best is the Extreme 555. This tire is a great tire. Nitto did well on this one for sure.

Hey David,

What kind of Bridgestone Potenzas did you have before?
RE730 or stock? I was curious because I just ordered the RE730s from hearing good reviews.

Thanks!!

Thumbs down

I don't like the Nittos. Sidewall on 18s is SOFTER than the stock Potenzas on 17 I had, so handling isn't that impressive. Plus, the Nittos are noisier although some of that can probably be attributed to the fact that I have fatter tires on the back than stock.

The Nittos will probably last a long time (treadwear rating is 300 I think!) although I expect to replace them with Toyos long before they wear out.

My opinion is also negative on the Nittos because one of them has a bad permanent flat spot giving a vibration that balancing can't cure.

nitto 555 extremes were the last set of tires on my car. They were pretty good tires but they were really scary in the rain when they were worn down. I would hydroplane everywhere. I just got a set of Toyo Proxes t1-s. Ive only had them on a week but so far I am really impressed with them. Very sticky tires. I can barely get my rear end loose because they grip so well

Cool nitto 555R

i have big rims, so tires become a vital key to a comfortable ride. I have to say the nitto tires are incredible, the car sticks on the ground so well, the ride is almost silent even at 100 mph. I think even the at the rain they still provide fantasic experience. i heard that Toyo is very nice too. anywayz, have no doubts about nitto's quality, I promise!

Thumbs up

Thanks for the input. Just ordered new 19" wheels, 19 x 8.5 & 10's running 235/35/19 & 275/30/19 Nittos. Wasn't ready to go 20's, had a hard enough time talking myself in 19's. Got an absolutely great deal on the Nittos, so I couldn't say no. With the 280 rating, I should get pretty good mileage out of them. I don't take my car to the track, so I'm sure the traction will be more than adequate.

DavidGS400,
Where did you get your Nitto 555 at and how much did you pay? I want to get 245/35/19 & 275/30/19 for my new wheels too.

Or does anyone else know where I can get the same setup with the Dunlop SP9000. Tirerack doesnt seem to carry 245/35/19.

Thanks!

I'm running 235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear. Those sizes match up to the stock 17's the best. Paid $192.55 each for the fronts and $294.84 each for the rears. My brother has a auto service garage, he got them Competition Parts Warehouse. If you're in the bay area, the have shops in San Jose (408) 243-3400 or Sacramento (916) 927-7878. The whole set costs just over a grand including tax. Tough to beat that price.

David, I run with Dunlop SP Sport 9000 245X40X18. Covered 9000 mile so far. Lost two tyres due to potholes which create bulges on sidewall. One tyre let go (front right) at 70mph. Steering remained surprisingly good to allow me to cross two lanes safely. Dunlop rep who examined tyre explained that the sidewall protrudes to protect rim. It did. I have to say that I was impressed. I ordered two more. Guess what - I now have another tyre bulge. Guess I`ll never know what milage tyres are capable of.
