why is it that the stock 17 inch wheel for the ls 430 is 7.5 inches wide and the 18 is the same width yet the falken koblenz. iforged aero, hre 545 and other 18 inch wheels have to be 8.5/ 9 inches wide to 'clear the calipers' ? is this misinformation or are the lexus oem wheels special or is there a difference between the 01-03 ls 430 and the 04 ls 430 I am not aware of regarding 18 inch rims?

nop, you misunderstood the whole point. the widths have nothing to do with brake clearance. you can still get for example iforged or hre at only 8" width and have them clear the brakes. it's all about the spoke design and maybe some offset. that's all.

the reason to go with wider in the front is just for better look and better handling, same thing for the rear.
