Default best winter tire?

ok before you say search... i have and i read all the threads but i didn't quite get the answer i was looking for. I have an IS350... I need winter tires badly... from all i read it seems like you guys recommend the blizzacks from bridgestone. But from what i have been reading it seems the the dunlop winter sport m3's beat them in almost every category. I was going to go with 225/45-18 all around with the m3's... i just wanted to know what you guys thought about those tires... and maybe some some other sudgestions... keep in mind i am looking for the best winter performer... no all season tires because i plan to have summer tires also

Nokian Hakapilita hands down best winter tire I have ever expierienced, and being from Saskatchewan Canada, I know a thing or two about winter tires.

I went with the 225/245 setup with the Blizzak LM-25's...just because that's what the Tire Rack had in stock. I was a little wary of getting that wide of a tire, but I had my first heavy, unplowed snow experience with 'em a few days ago, and I was shocked at how well they did. Even better than my brother's MDX with all-seasons. Now, I by no means was pushing it. I'm sure I could've gotten into a slide if I had wanted.

I think the Dunlops do very well, though I have no first-hand experience with those or the Nokians. Bottom line, you can't really go wrong.

I've got the Blizzak LM25's on 17's, non staggered on aftermarket wheels from tire rack. Theyve been great in the snow so far.

I have Blizzaks with staggered fitment. They do alright, but don't think you own the road with them.

I have been using the Gislaved Nord Frost 5. They have preformed very well on Snow/Ice, and on Dry Pavement. They are a scandinavian tire, and also have excellent reviews.

RSI .....choice on most Nokian is studded or non studded, what I mean is you can order them as studded or not, just have to specify to the tire shop.

I have a set of Michelins Alpinas sitting in my garage which I haven't put on yet as the 2 days we've had of snow has been on a weekend. 17" staggered 225/235's. My stocker Bridgestone tires were surprising fine in the slush so I haven't migrated yet.

I'm no help with this thread but I had Blizzaks on my celica years ago and it wasn't that great the 2nd winter with only 8k on the tires. Celica is front wheel drive too. I narrowed my search down to the Dunlops and the Michelin Alpinas I bought. A friend with a 911 swears by the Alpinas.

There are a number of different blizzaks for different kinds of cars and conditions. The Blizzak LM-25 is a performance winter tire and has great handling charisterics in my experience also with very good snow traction. If maximum traction is needed then a different blizzak or another snow tire might be better but I really like the blend of great handling and very good traction which should be a good fit for the IS 350. I have also read good things about the Dunlop M3 but no personal experience in order to compare with the LM-25.

I went with the Toyo Garit KX. They are rated in the top 5 overall snow tires. (not budget snow tires, overall best snow tire) the nice thing about them is that they also have deep threads, so it will last you a little longer then the Nokian's and Blizzaks. They also have the walnut bits in them...

I am running Blizzak REVO-1's. Great tire. I need these due to the fact that my house is up on a hill with about 50 yards of driveway at about a 35 degree angle. Treacherous when it snows. My car climbs this with no problems whatsoever. If you want to get a snow tire/performance, you are wasting your money. Save that for when you have on your summer wheels. Winter tires are about safety, comfort, and peace of mind.

These tires are very quiet at highway speeds too. Very low road noise.

Default I am from Chicago...My experience...

My modded GS400 has tried:

Dunlop WinterSport M3s
Great if you have plowed areas, expressway excellent, ice not good, wet and slush good, There is still Fishtailing. They will last great treadwear.

Blizzak LM-22
Better than the M3s in the fresh/deep snow, Excellent ice, wet and slush.
Floats more than the M3s on the expressway. Fishtailing moderate. Wear down quick.

Blizzak WS-50Without a doubt the best Severe winter tire for a powerfull rear wheel drive car. Deep/Light snow, Slush Ice and wet they handle without a doubt.
You will have confidence again. Trade off is very floaty at high speeds and they will wear down quick.

Tirerack rates the M3 very high but...there are few of those that actually have over 300lbs of torque at the rear wheels. I highly reccomend the Blizzaks.
