tire width and rim size

For some reason, I have never really known too much about wheels and tires. ![Uhh...](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/1387914497.gif)
My question is, what kind of tires can be put on 17x7 IS300 rims. Stock tire size is 215 width ... but I would like to go larger if possible. How large can I go?
I can understand stretching tires, but would that not involve putting tires on a rim that is wider than the tire?
I don't understand the concept too well, as to me it seems that if the wheel is only wide enough stock to hold a 215 tire ... how do I see people in posts saying they are running 235's.
Im sure this is a ridiculous question ... but I honestly do not know the answer.
Thanks!

there is room for movement... some people put way too narrow of a tire on a wide wheel, example 225's on a 10" wide wheel... some go the other way, i've seen a 315 on an 8" wheel... typically not recommended - for the most part you want to stay within the tire manufacturers recommended rim width range... however, getting outside of the recommended widths will still work, it just might not work as well as it's supposed to... some combinations will destroy tires if too far outside of the recommendations...
all tire manufacturers have data sheets that have this information listed...

Mitsu, thanks for the response ... that makes sense to me.
By any chance, do you know a good width tire to put on a stock IS300 17x7 wheel? I don't want to compromise safety or tire wear, but I would prefer something slightly wider than 215.
Do you think a 230-235 would be too big?
Lastly a stupid question - If the rim is 7" wide, will a wider take make the whole setup look more wide from behind? Will it fill out the wheel wells any better? Better traction with more rubber on the road?

235's it is than
Semi off topic, but I don't want to make a new thread but....
Should I be getting hubcentric rings to put oem is300 rims on an sc300?
Also in terms of spacers, what size would make for a nice staggered look, without being too wide? This is all stuff I have never even considered, as I have never upgraded wheels until now.
thanks a lot man, your a tire/wheel/alignment genius
