Default Wider than 245/45 on Stock 17"?

Folks,

Has anyone tried running anything wider than a 245/45 on stock 17" rims?

Is 255/40 out of the question - can the 8.0" rim handle that width? It looks like the overall diameter would stay within tolerable limits.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Regards,
Eric

There is someone on this forum that has 255/40x17s on the back with stock wheels. If you do a search he has pictures of the setup on his GS. The 255/40s are a little shorter than 235/45s; 265/40s are basically the same height as 235/45s. I had the recomended 235/45s and 255/40s x 17s on my 540i. I never could get an answer of why 265/40s were not used since they match the front better height wise.

Default 265's on 17" stock

Does anyone know if 265's are "doable" on the stock 8" rim?

Thanks,
Eric

There is a thread on page 2 of the suspension/wheel section that discusses putting wider tirers on the stock 17" wheels.

Why would you want to do this? Even with 18s, 19s, or 20s at 8.5" or 9" wide, people don't usually put tires wider than 245s on.

the tires will buble out and you will probobly loose performance, if you are looking for turning ability and you think more rubber is the answer, well you need a bigger rim too or else the tire's sidewals will keep shifting and it will result in an unresponsive and even un-safe vehicle!

Shogun, I put 265-40-17 on the rear and 235-45-17 on front. The tires are the same diameter. There is no prolem with handling. The rears buldge slighter more then the fronts but not bad. I don't think you could put the wider tire in front. There are in pictures in the suspension section, look under widest tires for stock rims.

How many miles have you put on your tires?

4500 and no problems at all. Also with the wider tire, the rim is more protected.

Duece,
Good info and thanks for the response. Please let me know if you run into any problems with the 260's.

Again, thanks for the input.
