Earlier SC's had 215/60R16 tires, but at some point 225/55R16 became standard.

There is a very slight difference in width and height (less than ¼"), but is there any significant difference in performance or feel between these two sizes?

I've been looking into switch from recommended size for ride comfort myself (to go from 245/40/18 to 245/45/18).

While I can't specifically provide an opinion on your question, I can say that the difference between 255 (~10") and 215 (~8.45") is more than what I'd think is considered "slight" in terms of tires, and the side height difference is close to a half inch (not less than a quarter).

I'd question whether there is a safe 1 1/2 inch width range for tires on the same rim. I'm not saying there isn't, just that would be a question I'd have.

255 was never a standard size if you are referring to 1st gen SC's. 225/55/16 is the standard.

The slight difference is tiny when comparing daily driver all-season tires. The real deciding factor would be the tire compound over width alone.
