Chrome looks good on Lexus cars. Not BMWs though. Like Retro-drive, those are sweet chrome wheels. The only thing about chrome (and huge chrome) is you seem to look at the wheels and not the car. You may not even notice the car.
Chrome is in, especially big chrome. As long as Cash Money makes albums, it will be too.

Manuel, I went back and forth on getting the lips chromed or high polished again for a long time. I ended up going with high polished for one reason. If I ever ended up curbing or bending one of lips, then the chrome would be ruined, and I would have to send the wheel off, get it broken down, pay for chroming again, etc, etc. With the high polished, the lip could possible be fixed with the wheel intact, unless it was a real severe bend. I can also have a local company re polish the lips, no shipping, etc..
HRE actually suggested not clear coating the lips, and I think I would have to agree with them. The clear coating on the lips tend to absorb water marks, detergents, etc.. I think you can keep an uncoated lip alot more shiny and un clouded than a coated one. You just gotta keep up on them like once a week.
I really wanted to go with the chrome lips, but I just couldnt take the chance on them Also, I have a friend that had a set of chrome wheels where the chrome peeled off of the lips in a very short period of time, but the faces were still perfect.
By the way Manuel, no HRE is not re doing them. After talking to them extensively, I found out they actually send out there wheels for chroming, clear coating, and the stripping of both. They do their own polishing, but not the other two. I found out who does the chroming for them, and sent the wheels directly to that company. Same quality, less $$$.

Saving money while retaining the quality is the RIGHT WAY to do it!

Actually, I was all about sending the wheels back to HRE just to keep that HRE quality in check. The last thing I wanted to chance was to have a set of HRE's, and ruin them with a cheap re finishing. Once I found out that they dont do it themselves, I figured why pay the middle man the extra cheddar just to say that HRE did them for me. If they actually did do the chroming themselves, then I probably would have spent a few extra $$ to let them do the job.
I just cant wait to get them back now. My car will be out of the body shop on this Friday(hopefully), I would like to have her step out with some new slippers on her feet!

Also, the tolerances change with the addition of chrome- the wheels will be more difficult to re-assemble. Please make sure whoever is re-building the wheels installs the "front" centers in the "front" rim components, and so on.
Also, there is a specific precedure for re-torquing the assembly hardware- make sure the bolts are torqued to 25 ft./lbs., and not more. Overtorquing the nuts/bolts can result in overstretching the bolt, and can lead to bolt failure in extreme cases.
HRE replaces the assembly bolts at no charge whenever we disassebble/reassemble wheels, as the bolts stretch somewhat when the nuts are tightened (they are placed in tension). You can re-use the existing bolts, however.
So, the bottom line is: you're paying more for expertise and experience- our assemblers do this all day, every day. Also, we repolish the outer rims at no charge, and can even remove any small nicks or irregularities in the rims due to tire mounting/dismounting. The wheels look brand-new after they are reworked by HRE.
If your assembler has ANY questions about how to reassemble HRE wheels, please have him contact HRE at once! (760) 598-1960
