Does 245/40/17 fit on standard 17" rim
I have a GS300 with 17" wheels and 235/45/17 tires. My rear tires need to be replaced. I can get used a pair of 245/40/17 tires from a friend. Does this combination fit:
Front: 235/45/17
Rear: 245/40/17
Front: 235/45/17
Rear: 245/40/17

I don't think you would want to do that. It's true that overall diameter will be a little different: the stock 235/45 OD is 25.32", and the 245/40 OD is 0.6" smaller at 24.72" (only 2.4% smaller, not really a problem). But for good tire dynamics, the 245/40 needs at least an 8-1/2" wide rim, and the stock 17s are 8" wide. If you can accept a "fatter" look, a 245/45 will go OK on the 8" rims, and overall diameter is 25.68" 1.4% bigger OD, still no problem. After all, if your front tires are worn to about 3/32" of tread and you put new same-size tires on with 11/32" tread, the OD difference will be over 2%.
