I have tried the search but haven't been able to get an answer to my question. i am going to be replacing my tires. I have the factory 17" chrome rims on my 98 GS400. My question is: Can I put 255's on the rear and 235's on the front? More importantly, is this going to adversely affect the stability/handling of the car?

My though process is that a slighly wider rear tire may give the rear a better look and a wider contact patch. This may be a completely stupid idea; if so just tell me.

 

From what I read 255 on stock rim is not recomended, go with 245 i know that will fit with out any problems.

 

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure what teh max. size I could go on with the 8" wide wheel without losing functionality.

 

I have Michelin Sport A/S tires on stock 17x8 wheels. I have 15mm spacers on the rear with 255/45 tires, and 5 mm spacers on front with 245/45 tires. Absolutely no issues. No rubbing, excellent quiet ride, tires fill out the wheel wells nicely. Probably not as sharp handling as 40 aspect tires, but I prefer the fatter look and comfortable ride. I have about 3,000 miles on them now, and don't see any uneven wear. I am thinking of moving the 15mm spacers to the front and putting 25mm on the rear, but I need to jack the wheels up and check the clearance to be sure the tires will clear the fenders. You can't put 255s on the front without spacers because they will rub on the inside against a wheel fitting. Hope this helps.

 

I also have a 98 GS400 and am running 235/14/17 in the front and 255/40/17 in the rear on stock 17 with no spacers and haven't had a problem yet.

So how does the tire wall look on the rear wheels? Is it more curved than straight? What tires do you have on - Z rated?

Are the spacers you have on from H&R? I guess you also must have changed the bolts?

I am considering doing what you did and would appreciate your input.
