I have 18x9 wheels... currently running 245/40/18's all around...
I'm thinking of putting 275/40/18's in the rear and keeping 245/40/18's in the front...
safe or no?
what is the maximum recommended width of tires for 18x9 wheels?

That'll fit, it'll just bow in a little bit instead of sitting totally straight on the wheel.

285 would still fit, but it probably wouldn't look too good.

255 and 265 would be the "average" size used on a 9"
