Default Rims in NYC

I know all you guys have heard of the pot holes here in NYC and what it could do to a car with big rims. I have a 2000 Gs400 with 17" OEM Chrome rims. The chrome is chipping off and has lost its luster. I tried chrome polish already. I was thinking of getting new 18" rims but I am wondering if it is a good idea to have them in NYC. Does anyone here have experience driviing in NYC with anything more than 18s? I don't want to drive 20mph and have to avoid every little crack on the road. Do I have to get better brakes with 18" rims?

i'm from BK, and its all in the way you drive, when I had 20s and no suspension, the car rode like stock! But I also dont do 100mph down Atlantic ave! you have to drive with some sense and watch the major potholes. I pretty much drive like grandpa in the city, because rushing to the next light (or accident) makes no sense.

I wouldnt think twice about putting on 18s, good luck

I have 18s and im in Brooklyn and drive in the city a lot too. If the roads are good, the ride is still very comfortable. If the roads suck, like most of them do in nyc, the ride isnt lexus like. If u drive a lot and like to go fast then get 18s. If i had another car as a beater, i would of put 19 or 20s on my lex. Like Dgot20s said, wether u got 17,18,19, or 20, just drive carefully and avoid potholes, and u should be fine.

There isnt that much difference between the ride with 17s and 18s, but if u get 18s make sure u lower ur car.

I agree 100% with RNM GS3. I live in Queens and I have 18s on my GS and the ride isn't much different from 17s. I had the stock 17s on my last GS. I have already ruined one tire on the wonderful roads of NYC. I didn't lower my car and I went with 245/40R18 size tires on my wheels.

i used 2 live in n.j. and thge roads r just as bad there too. it really depends on how u drive. i look at the ground about as much as i look at anything else. but u really can'y avoid something so just b careful and avoid what u can and the wheels should last longer..good luck..by the way i moved 2 west palm , florida and the never seen more perfect roads....sorry that was off subject....good luck

Default Florida people!

Please send your civil engineer up here to Philly and teach them how to build road and fill potholes around here!

Philly roads are on the top ten list of worst road condition in the country. We have potholes that are as big as your car, construction works being done on the same stretch of highway/route for 10 years (route 202 and 76 in King of P area, if you live in Philly you know what I mean)

City is packed with little potholes that perfectly planned for your tires, it's unavoidable unless you drive half of your car on the sidewalk which takes over by the bumbs and panhandlers!

But, that's Philly and I love it!

Still, Cali and FL have the best all year round weather, that helps out a lot to keep your roads beautiful. Every year, we have snow storms here in Philly and they salt the street/highway, SALT messes it all up!

Again: Civil Enginner WANTED (by Penn DOT) HAHAHA
