I thought having the tire inflated to the max psi on the sidewall increased fuel efficiency.

ummm technically yes, but you make the braking a lot harder too coz' of less grip. also when running hot, the air expand and you will be running too much pressure on the tire

rom, the max psi listed on tires are for COLD air. Hence, if a certain tire has 50psi as MAX, that means, you can put up to 50psi COLD. They already took the expansion in consideration already.

On 18's, I have 36 up front and 37.5 rear with BFG KDW-2.

I'm still experiementing to find a comfortable balance. Starting at 32 PSI all around, the tires felt soft and sluggish. Each pound I've gone up, the response has improved. At 38+, I wasn't getting a good contact patch as I could see the dust was mostly centered. I'm hoping that at about 36-37PSI I'll find a balance of comfort, mileage and performance.

I do 40 all around for the 19's in nyc (pot holes). 40 psi has saved may ****. For the 17's I do 33psi all around which is factory specs, and it offers a good compromise between ride and handeling.
