well i bought the LTX M/S (275/70 HR16) and discount tire i had them use the gsp9700 to balance my wheel/tires. as stated above of the 4 tires that were rim matched, 2 tires were way out (14 lbs later adjusted to 7 lbs; the other was 23 lbs). they changed the last tire with a new one (ie the 5th tire from stock) and had only 1lb imbalance. on average all tires had a maximum of 7 lbs imbalance (well withn spec of 10 lbs they said-i pretended to know but i didn't know what the difference was).
in any case the guys at tire discount are more knowledgeable than those of wheelworks or costco. best yet, they have better equipment, very helpful. lastly, i got my tires cheaper than costco which before today i thought was the cheapest route.
i haven't gone above 70mph becasue of the traffic tonite but i'm optimistic that i've done the bset replacement route for my tires-and that even if thre are vibrations-these guys have the right equipment, folks and organization to help me out.
thanks to folks in this forum esp bobhgd.

eblue,
Thanks for the tip about Discount Tire. Never looked closely at them before because their name implies "cheep" to me, but it sounds like they are actually a good outfit. The local one here also has a GSP9700.
Let us know how the new Michelin LTXs worked out in solving the hs vibration, being match-mounted.
Thx.

the tires worked out well. there's some very negligible vibration at 70-80mph(in not so paved roads) but not in the way i had them in the costco cross-terrains and is barely noticeable, and is probably just in my head. i plan to have it checked out at discount tire, but it's not urgent and i'm being a perfectionist. i'm happy with things as they stand.
this is my first time with discount tire-prior to this I used to either order from tirerack or costco.
