This article applies to the Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 (2005-2013).

If you are in the market for a Lexus IS series and cannot decide between the IS 250 and IS 350, then review the breakdown below. Make the choice based on personal preference, value, performance, and of course, a test drive.

IS 250

The IS 250 is a terrific entry level luxury sedan that offers both rear wheel and all wheel drive (AWD), but lacks the overall power of its big brother, the IS 350. The IS 250 still offers a luxurious interior and an extensive array of high quality features.

IS 250 components include the following:

  • 2.5 liter V6 204 horsepower engine
  • Rear wheel drive or AWD (optional)
  • F Sport package available
  • 11.7 front brakes / 11.4 rear brakes
  • 21 mpg city / 30 mpg highway (AWD will differ slightly)
  • $36,550 (RWD)

IS 350

The IS 350 is a powerful luxury sedan that offers both rear wheel and all wheel drive (AWD) options, and can easily hold up in a head-to-head match up with its German competitors. This is a vehicle that combines luxury and sports well, and would appeal the most to practical minded people. The 350's interior is improved in the space department; it is roomier for all passengers.

IS 350 components include the following:

  • 3.5 liter V6 304 horsepower
  • 8 Speed automatic transmission (RWD only)
  • Rear wheel drive or AWD (optional)
  • F Sport package available
  • 13.1 front brakes / 12.2 rear brakes
  • 19 mpg city / 28 mpg highway (AWD will differ slightly)
  • $40,065 (RWD)

Which One Should I Buy?

The Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 have many similarities. There are many options available in both series, including rear wheel drive, all wheel drive (AWD), F Sport packages, and other interior upgrades. However, there is one primary difference between these two and it can be summed up in one word: power. The overall power of the IS 350 with its 8-speed transmission and 0-60 in 5.7 seconds sets it apart from its little brother, the IS 250.

If weather and climate are no concern for you when purchasing the Lexus IS series, then look at the Lexus IS 350 rear wheel drive option with the F Sport package, as it will give you the highest performance with most power available in the series. If weather is a concern, then consider the IS 350 AWD option, as you will still get considerable power, although you will not have the 8-speed transmission option and your gas mileage may be slightly compromised. If you are in a colder climate, where you may face snow during parts of the year, and want a luxury sedan feel but do not need the speed, then the IS 250 AWD is for you.

If you are new to the luxury sedan market and working within a budget, then consider the IS 250 rear wheel drive option, as its interior finishes are excellent and the Lexus brand is always well regarded.
