Lexus IS: Why is My Dashboard Melting?

Melting dashboards are a recurring problem on some Lexus IS vehicles in hotter climates. Learn what to do about this issue below.

By Makeda - December 23, 2014

This article applies to the Lexus IS (2007-2014).

The dashboards on some newer IS 250s and IS 350s have been melting after exposure to sunlight. This is mostly happening to drivers living in warmer climates, especially Florida. Depending on the dealership and the vehicle's warranty status, Toyota might cover the replacement of the dashboard. in 2011, Toyota issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the IS 250 and IS 350 specifically, so don't panic if the dash begins falling apart while under warranty.

Materials Needed

  • UV dash cleaner protector
  • Dashboard cover

Step 1 - Call Lexus

Unfortunately, short of completely replacing the dash, there's no way to restore a dash that's already started melting. Lexus has kept quiet on disclosing why their dashboards are melting in hot temperatures, but they've acknowledged that it happens. Lexus has announced a Technical Service Bulletin for the dashboard and the front door panels. Be warned, though: the TSB came out in 2011 and was only meant to cover Lexus IS 250s and 350s built between 2006-2008. If the vehicle is still under warranty, Lexus will replace the dashboards and door panels. Drivers that are out of warranty shouldn't worry. At the very least, they should inquire about this fix at their local Lexus dealer to see if it's possible for Lexus to cover any of it. If that doesn't work, attempt to contact Lexus directly. They may be willing to partially cover the cost of repairs.

Step 2 - Protect the dashboard

If replacing the dashboard is not an option, the least that the average owner can do is protect the dashboard with a cover. Dashboard covers keep the sun from doing further damage by blocking it from view. Be sure to opt for a dashboard cover that is dark and has no shine to avoid glare.

Alternatively, treating the dash with a proper vinyl and leather protectant will help. 303 Aerospace Protectant is preferred for its lack of shine and alcohol, which will dry out leather and cause it to crack. Enszett Cockpit Premium is another protector that the community is fond of.

Pro Tip

Contact your local dealership as a last resort if you do not see the results you were hoping for. Request the service team to do an assessment to fix the affected area. If approved, they will take photos and ask for more details to send to Lexus headquarters.
